My Salvation Story and 34 souls!

How God saved me from prostitution.

December 13th, 2009. The day that changed everything. A day I'll probably never forget. That was the day I officially gave my life to Christ. Oh! What a glorious day it was! Remember those scenes in your favorite movies, where the villain was plotting, for years, and just when he thought he had won for good, the hero throws in the joker like a bomb? Boom! Then you see her in her tight jeans, black heels, and black sunshades walking away in slow motion as the fire burns behind her. Yeah! That was me and Jesus. On this spectacular day, the scorecard read "Jesus 1 - Satan 0". And it was a huge loss for Satan because he had been working on "Project Ugonne Ann" for years. 20 years Precisely. He used every tool in his arsenal: MTV base, Hints magazines, Mills and Boon, Porn, Romantic novels, Hollywood, Lesbianism, Friends, Movies, you name it. For years, he was consciously and subconsciously programming prostitution into my soul.

Yup! Whoredom was precisely where I was headed with the way my life was going at that time. I came to Uniport to do my pre-degree with some of my secondary school friends. I went to an all-girls boarding school so it felt like "Yes, I've finally been unleashed". All I was thinking about was the fun I would have as a freshman at the university. And I had almost two decades of lousy programming to help me unleash my iniquitous potential. Uniport boys didn't help either. They chased me every day and everywhere and they were dogged.

The Turning point

I went to all the parties and clubs I was invited to. I would meet a guy today and the next night, he was in my room begging me for "just the tip". The crazy thing is that I was too scared of losing my virginity so I never really had sex with anyone but I'll do every other thing. I was too naive and weak-willed to realize that I was being manipulated most of the time. (Btw, a technical virgin and a full-blown runs girl are the same in the sight of God. Don't be deceived, my sister)

Of course, I failed my pre-degree program and all the people I was balling with couldn't help me. My Dad was so disappointed and I didn't want to return to Enugu. I started applying for a preparatory science program called ISLT while waiting to rewrite Jamb. At this point, there was nothing else I could do so I turned to God for help through my neighbors, Obinna and Collins. I started following Collins to his campus fellowship and I got sucked in. It was like I discovered a new world I never knew existed. That year, God helped me get admitted into the University of Port Harcourt to study Biology and I totally became a church girl. But even though I had gotten "saved", I still struggled with sexual sins as a believer because guess what? The unbeliever may need salvation but the saint needs transformation. 

There were many moments of struggle and trying to do things with my power but my flesh failed me. At some point, I almost started to believe that I had a prostitute streak in my soul and I should probably stop fighting it. That's what the enemy wanted me to believe but he's such a defeated, lying foe. There were 3 major things that helped me overcome in my walk with God:

  • Genuine Repentance: I used to genuinely believe that as long as you loved the guy you were dating, it was okay to be intimate with him. In other words, If I love my boyfriend, there's nothing wrong with sleeping with him. Ahh! That's a lie from the pit of hell. Fornication is a sin whether love is present or not. Like me, you have to recognize that sex before marriage is a sin and repent. Sin blurs you from God. It makes you blurry, powerless, vulnerable to nonsense & unrecognizable in the Spirit. Hence the unanswered prayers, weak spirituality, deep frustrations, purposelessness, and even poverty or lack that you may be experiencing in your life right now. Remember the evil Spirit that said, "Jesus I know, Paul I know... Who are you"? That beating that the seven sons of Sceva got, E get why! If life is beating you down in any way, you need power! There's a reason wealth is often referred to as "Ike" in Igbo. Wealth= Power and you need that power to thrive in these times.

  • The love of the father: Oh!! This one is the kicker. The love of God delivered me from this besetting sin completely. The day I got the revelation in Romans 8, that nothing, not even the powers of hell, can ever separate me from God’s love, I became unstoppable. It changed everything.

  • Personal Transformation: The truth is that we all need to be constantly transformed by the renewing of our minds to experience the abundant life that Christ died to give us. The difference between a powerful believer and the rest is transformation. The unbeliever needs salvation but the saint must be transformed.

The Salvation Prayer

Beloved, I share my story with you because today can be your own glorious December 13th. If you have not received the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior; then you don’t belong to the Kingdom of God, and I want to invite you to receive the life of God and become a Born Again believer today. This is what the scriptures say.

The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says,“Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”

Romans 10: 8 – 10

Wherever you are right now, you can speak these words below, believing in your heart, and immediately become an accepted child of God, our Heavenly Father, and a member of the household of God!

“Dear God, I recognize that I have not lived my life for You up until now. I have been living for myself and that is wrong. I need you so much today and I want You in my life. I acknowledge the finished work of Your Son Jesus Christ in giving His life for me on the cross at Calvary, and I long to receive the forgiveness you have made freely available to me through this sacrifice. Come into my life now, Lord. Take up residence in my heart and be my king, my Lord, and my Savior. From this day forward, I will no longer be controlled by sin, or the desire to please myself, but I will follow You all the days of my life. My days are in Your hands. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

If you decided to repent of your sins and receive Christ today, welcome to God’s family. Now, as a way to grow up spiritually, I encourage you to do the following:

  • Get baptized as commanded by Christ

  • Tell someone else about your new faith in Christ.

  • Spend time with God each day. It does not have to be a long period of time. Just develop the daily habit of praying to Him and reading His Word. Ask God to increase your understanding of the Bible.

  • Pray for the in-filling of the Holy Spirit.

  • Seek fellowship with other followers of Jesus. Develop a group of believing friends to answer your questions and support you.

  • Find a local church where you can worship God.
